How to Find the Correct HSN Code for Your Product

What is HSN

The Harmonised System of Nomenclature is a WCO classification with 21 sections and 99 chapters. India uses 8-digit codes; the first 2 digits are the chapter, next 2 the heading, next 2 the sub-heading and last 2 the tariff item.

How many digits must you print

Turnover up to ₹5 crore: 4 digits mandatory on B2B invoices (optional on B2C). Above ₹5 crore: 6 digits on all invoices. Exports and imports always need 8 digits.

Where to look it up

Use the HSN search on the GST portal (Services → User Services → Search HSN), the CBIC tariff, or your supplier's purchase invoice which already carries the code.

SAC for services

Services use 6-digit SAC codes beginning with 99, e.g. 998314 for IT design and development, 996511 for road transport of goods.
